Why is human connection so important?
Human connection is the sense of closeness and belonging a person can experience when having supportive relationships with those around them. Connection is when two or more people interact with one another and each feels valued, seen and heard. There’s no judgment and you feel uplifted by interacting with them.
PsychCentral provides examples of human connection such as a chat over coffee, hug from a partner after a long day or a hike in the woods with a family member. Connecting with someone doesn’t always have to be lengthy or include lots of words. Often it is time spent in relative closeness that can provide a bonding experience, thus many benefits including, but not limited, to:
- Mental health boost
- Longer life span
- Improved quality of life
- Increased fulfillment
In 2019, before the pandemic, 3 in 5 Americans reported being lonely. After the pandemic, this number has increased, especially among young people and I’ve seen this first-hand through the eyes of our teenage daughter.
